4/5After years of dope guestspots and delays, Guilty Simpson finally makes his debut on Stones Throw Records. With high expectations from everyone does this backpacking thug pull it off? In my opinion he does drop a fine debut. Guilty Simpson has an undeniable presence on the mic. He is able to keep your attention with just his voice and flow, even when there are some moments he doesn't say much. Those moments are few and far between though. As he always has some clever lines to entertain the listener. It doesn't matter what he spits about, whether it's the police, women or doing some rough shit. Guilty Simpson is one of the few artists how is able to walk the thin line between having underground respect and still come with some street shit. I don't know how he does it, but he surely pulls it off. The only negative in the lyrics department is the hook on the J.Dilla produced 'I Must Love You'. It's absolutely atrocious and it makes me wonder who approved that one. Where Guilty Simpson really shines on the mic, it's the production that staggers at times. Of all producers present Madlib comes out the weakest. Madlib of all people. Not that his beats are broken, but they just seem to be a bit too simple and they fail to have much of an impact, though 'Yikes' was on some Madvillainy like stuff. His brother Oh No does better fortunately with the two beats he drops. Though Madlib performs weak, it's Mr. Porter who drops the weakest one. The RnB-ish beat on 'Kinda Live' is weak and doesn't fit Guilty Simpson at all. What does fit him are the soundscapes produced by Black Milk. He trully comes up big and some of the best songs are done by him. If 'Run' is any indication that Sean Price/Guilty Simpson/Black Milk collaboration album is going to be incredible. DJ Babu from Dilated Peoples also drops one beat and it's one of the best he has ever done. Guilty Simpson himself is undeniable and he comes out strong here, too bad there are some weaker backdrops present here or this could have been a trully great release. As it is now it's still a good release and one Detroit should be proud off.
